Here’s some updated tank photos.  The tank looks allot wider than the photos show. The frag rack will be removed once I find places for those corals.

SMCooler Frags

Stopped over at Stan’s (RC Name: SMCooler) place last night to pick up some frags. He’s a local reefer that sells high end sps, zoo, and chalice frags to the local community. I like dealing with local reefers in this hobby. Generally you get better deals and can see the actual frags. When you buy from a store or the internet, you don’t know how the colors will turn out after they’ve been under artificial lighting.

Stan’s setup is pretty amazing. I took some photos with my Iphone. See below. He basically has 2 large frag tanks that are plumbed into a large display tank. He’s using a Deltec 902 for filtration and using a calcium reactor and kalk to maintain calcium levels. He’s also using some Brightwell additives with a splash of zeovit. He also maintains another stand alone system that’s run off a Bubble King Mini. This 120g system display has all of his super high end sps colonies. With this system, he’s using 2 part to maintain calcium levels. Whatever he’s doing, it sure looks good!

I’ll post pictures of the frags I got in a few days.

Large setosa colony. He had a few, but this was the biggest one.

Coral Transfer- Part II

Started tearing down the old tank. I  removed a lot of the rock and cleaned the nuisance algae off. Whatever frags could be removed from the rock have been transfered to the frag tank. So far, so good. No casualties yet! Live rock, that had a lot of algae on it, will be placed in a bucket with no light. I figure this will weaken it. That way, when it’s placed in the main display, the cleanup crew will have a much easier time managing it. The old tank still has a lot of rock left, 3 red bubble tip anemones and all of my fish. Here’s some pictures of my frag tank. Colonies are in the main display but I can’t seem to get good pictures.

Coral Transfer- Part 1

Beginning the slow and painful process of transfering corals and live rock from the old system into the new one. The first step is transfering the existing coral, that can be moved easily, into the frag tank. I started by cleaning up my old tank’s bottom that was overgrowing w/ zoanthids. Most of my zoos started to grow onto each other and the dominant species were killing some highly prized ones. Not by chemical means, but by growing over top of each other and sufficating the bottom ones. Anyone working with zoos should know that they can release a toxin that can be deadly. Always use gloves when cutting and fragging zoos.

My acans were moved to the frag tank as well. Most of these species are from Australia, but some are from Japan. I’m not sure if the Japanese acans are illegally imported or not, but they are definitely unique.

Some of my sps were also moved. There are the rare ones that always grow slow and are still frag size. I’ll post pictures when I get a chance, but the lighting on the frag take is messign up the colors on my camera.

I’m dipping everything that goes into the new tank in Salifert Flatworm Exit, Topic Marin Pro-cure, and Coral Revive. Also zapping any aiptasia, I can see, w/ Joe’s Juice. Just being extra cautious to prevent any pests from entering the new tank.

ORA Frags

I just picked up some of the newer LE ORA frags.  ORA frags tend to do well in my tank and I like the fact that they generally hold their colors.  I brought these from a LFS, The Frazer Zoo. Mike over there knows his stuff and his prices are the best around. Here is a link to the store http://www.frazerzoo.com/.  Pictures below, colors are much better in person!

Frags on Rack:

Hawkins Blue Echinata:

Oregon Tort and Phil’s Granulosa:

Pinkish Lokani ? (Not ORA):

Here’s a few frags of a Cali Tort I also picked up from a local reefer:
