In-Sump Filter Sock Holder- Design Stage

I’m a strong believer in using filter socks to capture detris from the water column. As long as you replace them every few days, they shouldn’t be a problem creating nitrates. I’ve been using off-the-shelf filter sock holders in my sump. Although they work OK, they’re not as cleanly designed and simple to use, as I would like. One of the problems is that I’m using  a 4″ and a 7″ filter sock holders to handle 3 inlets. That means I need to replace different size filter socks periodically and removing these socks from their holders are a pain in the butt. Recently at MACNA, I saw some custom sumps that had integrated filter socks holders. I’m going to copy these designs into my own in sump filter sock holder. I’ll be building this holder from 1/4″ pvc sheet. Much easier to work w/ than acrylic (but just as expensive!). Here’s the initial design. Water from the display and frag tank will be plumbed into a 18″x 4″x 10″chamber. This should reduce water splashing noise from these returns. The water chamber overflows into the filter sock holding area and into the skimmer area of my sump. What I like about this design is that the socks can be easily removed without moving the plumbing around, unlike existing hang-on filter sock holders. I may add an additional baffle to redirect all the water, coming through the filter socks, directly to my skimmer’s pumps intake nozzle. This should really make my filter system work at it’s optimum potential.

Neptune Systems- APEX- Vortech Pump Integration

Curt, president of Neptune Systems , just released a statement that says the APEX will be able to control the Ecotech Marine’s MP40w pumps in the near future. See the statement below. Here’s some things I’d like to see: Be able to see a real-time graph of the pump’s speed (kinda like an old equalizer), integrate w/ the feed mode of the APEX controller, be reasonably cheap, and be able to email alert if the pump gets detached(maybe measure irregular pump speed?). That would be cool. Otherwise, the controller that comes w/ the MP40w is good enough for me.

“Neptune Systems Announces New Product for EcoTech Marine’s VorTech Pumps

November 17, 2009—San Jose, CA— Neptune Systems, the leading manufacturer of aquarium controllers is developing a wireless interface which will allow for the control of EcoTech Marine’s line of VorTech wireless pumps.

“We are extremely excited about this new product”, says Curt Pansegrau, president of Neptune Systems. “The feature rich interface module allows for the market leading VorTech pumps to be used to their fullest potential. With development underway and prototypes already running in the lab, we are pleased to be the first controller company to utilize this versatile wireless interface technology.”

The AquaBus based VorTech interface module will allow for the independent control of multiple pumps. In addition, firmware updates of both the interface and the VorTech pumps as wells as reporting of pump status and diagnostic information is possible.  Like all Apex accessories the VorTech Interface Module is also plug-n-play, so setup and configuration is extremely easy.

Internal development has already begun with working prototypes running in the lab. Beta testing will begin shortly with full production scheduled in Q1 2010.

Neptune Systems Apex- Web Access Success!

I finally got my Apex controller connected to the Internet! The Apex controller has a built-in webserver that allows you to access the controller, via the internet. In order to do this, you need the controller to be connected to your router and configured to allow public access. I ran into some problems, but finally figured out that I had the wrong ip address entered in my wireless router! Since my Apex controller is nowhere near my router, I had to connected the controller via a wireless bridge. I’m using the Buffalo Nfiniti Bridge. Configuration was super simple and I now have a wireless connection between my controller and my router. From anywhere in the world, I can now access my controller and see what my tank is doing. Priceless!

MACNA 2009- EcoTech Marine

Want to create some waves in your tank? Here’s EcoTech Marine’s answer to that question. Whether it’s the MP40w, MP20 or the MP10, EcoTech’s got a solution. Keep in mind these demo tanks are narrow and fairly short. Also, real world applications will have live rock and corals to hinder the flow. Still, this gives you a good idea what can be done.

MACNA- Deltec Display

Deltec came in full force to MACNA Atlantic City 2009. Marvin was there displaying all the goodies from Germany, including their latest skimmers. Their skimmers have finally caught up to everyone else’s new releases. These skimmer are using wider, shorter bodies, bubble diffusers, and large necks to handle increased air flow created from their new skimmer pumps. Although these skimmers seem well designed, I think they’re fugly looking (and aesthetics do mean something!). Also, their prices seem higher than Bubble Kings. Decide for yourself and check out the pictures below.
